The Penguin area was first settled in 1961 by Edward Joseph Beecrost. Penguin took its name from the fairy Penguin and was so named by Ronald C. Gunn a distinguished botanist of the era. The fibro cement penguin was erected to celebrate the centenary of the proclamation of the penguin township.
This town has got Penguins everywhere!! There is a penguin bins, penguin shopping centres and then the local 'Penguin Butcher'. I can reassure you that they do not sell Penguin meat.
One down 5 more to go in Tasmania.
